Last week, in a special Disney Family Singalong event, Ariana Grande performed a cover of “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” from Disney’s Hercules.
Minutes later, Ari stans began pushing for her to play Meg in a live action Hercules film, even before Disney has announced plans to make one.
And, ngl, I see it.
IS ARIANA GRANDE IRL MEG FROM HERCULES?
The pony tail loving pop star plays everyone in the performance, from the individual iconic muses to Meg herself. And, ya, it kinda slaps.
Following the stream, Ariana shared photos of the Disney Greek demigod’s iconically cynical love interest, shortly before fans shared them with photo by photo comparisons of Ari and Meg.
at least out loud … i won’t say i’m in love— Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) April 16, 2020
But, uh, what’s the Disney Family Singalong?
Disney Family Singalong is a live streamed concert held over the weekend, featuring renditions of some of Disney’s most iconic music performed by pop musicians.
Next to Ariana Grande’s cover, other noteworthy performances included Christina Aguilera’s cover of The Lion King’s “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” The High School Musical cast (bar Zac Efron) performing “We’re All In This Together,” and Darren Criss performing The Jungle Book’s “I Wanna Be Like You.”
Fans have even signed a petition to make it happen
The petition, which extensively breaks down the different reasons why Ari should play Hercules’ love interest and lovesick icon, claims that Grande being casted would have the same cultural impact as casting Beyoncé in Disney’s live action remake of The Lion King.
“Ariana as Megara probably would be a Beyoncé as Nala situation[;] really iconic and marked for history in pop culture.”
The petition continues, listing her singing and acting ability, as well as the physical similarities between the cartoon character and Miss Grande.
“To people saying a Greek woman should play Megara, Ariana Grande is Italian, she especially has Sicilian and Abruzzese ancestry,” the petition’s organisers add. “She also has some Greek heritage so she is perfect for the representation of this Mediterranean sassy character.”
Ultimately, they stress that Disney live actions usually feature new music and, “can you imagine the soundtrack???”
And, while Disney has yet to announce a live action Hercules, with the company already turning to irl renditions of The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast, The Jungle Book, Mulan and The Little Mermaid, there’s a high chance we could see a non-animated remake of Hercules in the future.
Whether Ariana Grande will be cast in said hypothetical film is nor here or there, but one thing must remain in this remake. Something incredibly stupidly important to maintaining everything important about Disney’s Hercules. Danny DeVito must reprise his role as Hercules’s faun mentor Phil.
Disney has yet to comment. But, as of writing, the petition has been signed by nearly 14,000 people.
