Harry Styles, eternal fav, has joined the cast of Olivia Wilde’s upcoming feature film Don’t Worry Darling. Given the fact his upcoming Australian tour dates were canned (RIP), the promise of new Styles content soon is music to our ears. Even if this is technically a return to acting, not, y’know, new music.
Now, we’ve just been given our first look at The Boy in costume. Don’t Worry Darling has officially started filming and a picture from the set has made its blessed way onto the internet. Please, enjoy this new picture of Styles with a tousled curl falling gently over his forehead, delightfully decked out in plaid and check patterns rocking 2020’s unlikely indicator of sex appeal: a chain necklace.
This TikTok pretty much summarises our reaction. He. Looks. So. Good.
For those who may have missed it, Wilde’s upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling is a highly anticipated followup to her directorial debut Booksmart. Don’t Worry Darling plot details are thin on the ground, but per Deadline, the film is about an isolated ‘utopian’ community in the California desert, set in the 1950s. The extremely stacked cast already included the likes of Florence Pugh (women!), Chris Pine (the superior Chris), and Dakota Johnson (of the limes). The role Styles will tackle was actually set to be played by Honey Boy‘s Shia LaBeouf, who unfortunately departed the project because of a scheduling conflict.
We’re feeling a mixture of things here: sad we won’t get to see LaBeouf in ’50s Cali style, intrigued as to the role that these very different people could both inhabit, and very pleased to see Styles’s acting career only go from strength to strength—a lead role for the boy!!!
It’s Styles’s first return to the screen since his role in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, and based on the sounds of this thriller it looks like we’re in for another tense film. (We’re bringing our most chill essential oils for this one.)
While there’s no official art or imagery yet and we have but a single sentence about its plot, fans are already throwing out concept posters. One sees Pugh’s face merged with Styles’ in a very Cronenberg Lite way.
Pugh is going to be playing the lead, a housewife, who as all housewives do, discovers a dark secret about her picture-perfect life. Given Styles is playing a lead role we’re wondering if he’s the house husband? We can only imagine the Pugh x Styles couple edits that are incoming. Wilde congratulated Styles on joining the cast, introducing him and Pugh as ‘Jack and Alice.’
While we’re highly anticipating this inaugural return to acting for Styles, chatter is already starting about what’s coming next. According to some clandestine intel, Styles might be tapped to star in an upcoming X-Men reboot as Pyro.
Enjoy the good eating today Styles fans!
