Everything You Need To Know About ‘RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race’

Soo, despite us being right in the middle of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 12, VH1 and RuPaul “fracking” Charles have announced a new celebrity special series of Drag Race, coming to our Stan screens starting this weekend called RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race

Thanks to this new series, we’ll get to see our faves Trixie Mattel, Alyssa Edwards, Monique Heart, Kim Chi and Bob the Drag Queen back in the workrooms for something that’ll *hopefully* be a bit better than Drag U (“gurl, that really was a rough spot…”)

But, uhh, what is it, who’s in it and, why is it airing in between RuPaul’s Drag Race season 12 and RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked?

Obviously, spoilers for RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race and bless the SpoiledDragRace subreddit for all this info.

What is RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race?

RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race is a four-part mini-series beginning this Saturday.

Each episode, three beloved queens from the show will be assigned a celebrity they’ll have to makeover and coach on one of four staple RuPaul’s Drag Race challenges: Snatch Game (EP1), a Roast (EP2), a girl group challenge (EP3) and a Rusical (EP4).

And, at the end of every episode, the three dragged up celebs will Lip Sync For Their Life in a threeway battle.

Who Are The RuGirl Mentors?

Ngl, I’m really watching this for the potential of seeing Sibling Rivalry co-hosts Bob the Drag Queen and Monet X Change on TV together for the first time (and until we inevitably get an all winner’s season), or meme kweens Monique Heart, Alyssa Edwards and Vanessa ‘Miss Vanjieee’ Matteo, not for the celeb guests.

For Snatch Game, we’ll see Trixie Mattel (who, in case you forgot, bombed her Snatch Game on All Stars 3), Monet and Bob. In the second, we’ll see Bob again, this time with Season 8 sister and makeup queen Kim Chi and *oddly* Nina West. Then, we’ll see one of my personal faves Monique Heart with Miss Vanjie (Miss Vanjie… Miss… Vanjieee…) and ultimate All Stars meme-maker Alyssa Edwards. Lastly, Alyssa Edwards will return in the final episode, joined by All Stars 4’s other winner Trinity the Tuck and future All Stars winner Asia O’Hara (a boy can dream, can’t he).

While this is an incredible cast and it’s nice to see Bob and Alyssa interact with different queens that mesh with their different aesthetics, I kinda wish we used those slots for two other beloved former competitors? Feels a bit like a missed opportunity to not have Aja in the girl group challenge and Bianca Del Rio or Alaska Thunderfuck in the Roast.

Obviously, the producers could have asked them and they might’ve turned down, and probably don’t want to come back to the show (especially Bianca, lol), but still!

This Is RuPaul’s Secret *Celebrity* Drag Race, What Part Of That Do The Producers Not Understand?

While the queens appearing on the show are all incredible, triple-A superstars, I’m not 100% sure I could say the same for the alleged secret celebrities that are rumoured to appear.

In episode one, we’ll see Younger’s queer and chaotic star Nico Tortorella, Riverdale’s Jordan Connor (he plays Sweet Pea) and Super Donuts comedian and actor Jermain Fowler. At the very least, it’s good we’ll have a trio of actors for the acting challenge, lol.

Then, we’ll meet Zoey Extraordinary Playlist actor and singer Alex Newell, Schitt’s Creek’s Dustin Milligan and American Ninja Warrior host Matt Iseman (lmao what). From there, Miss Heart, Vanjie and Edwards makeover comedian and actress Phoebe Robinson and singers Hayley Kiyoko and Madison Bear. Ending it off, American TV host Loni Love, reality TV star Tami Roman and Ugly Betty’s and Desperate Housewives’ Vanessa Williams.

Now, idk about you, but I know virtually none of the words that left my mouth moments ago. Of these celebs, I only know *of* Nico Tortorella, Alex Newell, Dustin Milligan and Hayley Kiyoko, and even then, none of them scream “celebrity.” Sure, I’m not expecting my mans Harry Styles and J-Hope or Billie Eilish (altho can you imagine that lineup, my god). That said, according to Pride, Mr. Styles has openly expressed interest in competing.

But, why not use this opportunity to bring back some of the guest judges you’ve had on the show?

Love, Simon star Keiynan Lonsdale has played around with drag before. You could easily turn to someone like Troye Sivan for a music challenge and to get young fans like us involved. Hell, even Tiffany New York is perrrfect reality TV (I mean, imagine her and Monique Heart paired together, their minds…)

Looking at the lineup, the queens seem like bigger internet celebrities than the very celebs they’re doing over. I’ll hold my tongue until the show actually airs but what part of secret celebrity drag race do the producers not understand?

At the very least, this’ll be another opportunity to see some of our favourite RuPaul’s Drag Race stars again, having fun and in a far less stressful environment. Think of the potential memes, y’all. Think of the memes.
