My Body Is Extremely Ready For ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’

Guys. I knowwwww I only recently watched the joy that is Taika Waititi’s Academy Award-winning (!!!) Jojo Rabbit, but I really need Thor: Love And Thunder to get here faster so I can hook it in my veins. Just a constant stream of only Taika Waititi, Bong Joon Ho and Andrea Arnold films, okay?

In anticipation of Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth’s next solo-Thor movie, slated for release on the 5th of November 2021, (assuming the coronavirus doesn’t worsen and push it out like the James Bond film…) Syrup’s rounding up what we know about the film so far.

Batman jumps ship from DC to Marvel

Christian Bale, of “where is she” gravelly Batman voice fame (and other things I guess), is joining Thor: Love And Thunder as the film’s lead villain. Even considering how stacked the Thor franchise’ cast has been thus far (my guy Idris Elba and my gal Cate Blanchett have also had roles) it’s a huge move.

Bale has done his time in superhero films as Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but this will be his first time playing a villain. And under Waititi’s direction? We literally can’t wait.

The director told ET: “If you take Ragnarok, which I feel was a very outlandish and big, bombastic film, we’re trying double down on everything we did with that.” Can’t wait x 2.

Fast and Furious fans can have a little Vin Diesel… as a treat

Vin Diesel, famous Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast and sometimes actor, has also let slip that Thor: Love And Thunder will feature some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) pals from Guardians Of The Galaxy

“[Taika Waititi] talked to me about how Thor: Love And Thunder will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be very interesting. Nobody knows, but maybe I shouldn’t have said anything,” he told Comic Book. Bless you Dom, you fool.

He’s also teased that we might be seeing sth a little different from the baby Groot we’ve come to know, love, adore and want to protect with all our hearts. “I only have two words about that character and it is ‘Alpha Groot’,” he said. I can only assume there are bizarro daddy!Groot memes are on the horizon.

Nat Port’s gonna be Thor

Taika Waititi’s impact you guys. Apparently it only took one meeting with the director for Natalie Portman, who played scientist Jane Foster in previous Thor films to agree to come back for Love And Thunder. Not only that, but she’ll be playing a female Thor. She joked in an Instagram post to, “Remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked,” and I am extremely here for it.

She’ll be joining Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie, a character who we last left as she was taking up her new job as the ruler of Asgard, the realm which Thor and his space-god race come from. Which leads us to:

There might be some proper queer representation

Thus far the most we’ve really had in the way of LGBTQIA+ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a bit of a throwaway in Avengers: Endgame. People weren’t too happy about it (for v good reasons tbh).

The big man at Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige has made comments that we’ll be seeing more diverse presentations of characters in upcoming films. Coupling these with Thompson’s vocal speculation about her character’s arc (“I think, first of all…as new king, she needs to find her queen” yes Tessa) we are really hoping Waititi comes through with the goods.

Thompson’s character Valkyrie is openly queer in the Marvel comic books, and it’d be nice to see some big gay energy, that’s all.

The final q that’s on my mind? Where is Loki in all of this.
