If you’ve followed any of my entertainment coverage here at Syrup dot com, you’ve probably noticed I’m an unashamed fan of cringeworthy TikTok culture, vines and anime. In fact, not gonna lie, I’m a total weeb.
And look, it’s our god given right as Gen Zs to have an embarrassing internet past and to make content that’s just as entertaining as it is embarrassing. And my latest TikTok nerdy obsession is no exception.
Ever watched Sailor Moon and said to yourself, ‘maaan, Sailor Jupiter could literally step on me and I’d thank her?’ Or, perhaps you watched a recent episode of the 2019 run of Pokémon, remembered a fond moment of it from your childhood and thought, ‘hey, wait a minute, how the fuck is Ash Ketchum still ten years old???’
Well, my fine anime watching friend, may I present TikTok user Deezumaki and her videos parodying the absurdities of anime storylines and badass femme fatales we all love. If you’re an anime fan, there’s a good chance you’ll get a kick out of these fandom fandub memes.
Wait, what exactly is it?
Essentially, Deezumaki’s videos feature her in front of a green screen background of an anime character, as she imitates their voice and dubs over it with a vine reference or tweet. As she describes, she’s “just a homosexual and stupid baybe,” but if anything, her videos are a step above the cringeworthy lip-syncing miming trend of cosplay TikTok that’s super uncomfortable to watch.
Lip-syncing has always been at the heart of cringeworthy TikTok videos but there’s something about these I kinda dig. Deezumaki has a genuine chameleon-like ability to tap into anime voices and make any cursed line sound authentically pulled from the show.
It’s, dare I say, extremely online content. Have a look for yourself below.
And look, while I’m stuck inside and hitting week four of self-isolation with no end in sight and starting to go hog-fucking wild, this feels genuinely funny to me.
