We Asked Someone From Those Viral Chinese Streetwear TikToks How To Get That Drip

Whether you’re on TikTok or not, you’ve no doubt seen the viral compilations of seemingly “everyday people” walking the streets of Chengdu, China in slow-mo to a slowed down Billie Eilish track and some absolute fire fits. Facts are facts: Chinese street fashion goes off.

And, if you’ve seen any of the above clips, two people probably stick out: 25-year-old fashion blogger, model and makeup artist Ergo Zhang and her girlfriend Lesley. And since we were also obsessed, Syrup spoke with Zhang to learn just what we gotta do to get that Chinese streetwear drip.

What is a trend in Chinese street fashion you haven’t seen done in the West?

“It’s the Chinese traditional costumes that are the real treasures handed down from ancient China to the present,” Zhang told us, referencing a number of traditional Chinese garments made popular into the country’s streetwear.

What are your top three favourite Chinese fashion brands right now?

“The first brand is Roderic Wong which is gender neutral, easy but chic,” she said.

“GuoPei is a very talented gown-making designer. Her style is more like a combination of Alexander McQueen and Valentino.”

“The last one is named 1807 and from Chengdu,” she added. “It’s so dope and full of street feelings.”

Is there a difference between an ‘everyday outfit’ in China and ones in the West?

“There is never any difference between an ‘everyday outfit’ in China and the West,” Zhang told us. “I think the only difference is the fashion attitude of different people. For me, it’s such an exciting thing to dress up myself for everyday.”

“More and more young people like us prefer to show ourselves and are more brave than the last generation especially in the dressing part.”

What is your number one tip for styling an outfit to take it to the next level?

“It’s comfort,” said Zhang. “Sometimes people sacrifice comfort just in order to look amazing but it’s just weird and not worth it.”

What are five items of clothing you can’t live without?

“Crop tops, tank tops, suits, high-waisted pants and white sneakers.”

Have you ever seen a stranger’s streetwear outfit and couldn’t stop thinking about it?

“I once saw this girl wearing a gothic style robe with very special sunglasses which have only one lens. It was crazyyy.”

Who’s an underrated style icon you think people should follow?

“I really like a fashion blogger named Marie von Behrens. She’s got real taste so everyone will be inspired by her.”

What fashion trend do you think defines 2020?

“Solid colours with low colour saturated clothing and sports elements will define 2020.”
