If you weren’t convinced that vintage and second-hand goods are the future of fashion, let our queen Zendaya make the case for you.
The 24-year-old Emmy-winning Euphoria star recently attended the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, which celebrate “the best of sustainable fashion,” and the brands and personalities who actively encourage and incorporate eco-friendly, sustainable fashion practices. At the event, Zendaya was awarded the Visionary Award, which celebrates her achievements in diversity and inclusion in fashion and film, accepting the award in a gown that is as old as her.
Taken from Versace’s fall 1996 collection (the year Zendaya AND I were born… damn), the dress was designed by Mr. Gianni Versace himself and, thanks to Zendaya’s presentation, felt fit for the modern era. A chocolate brown gown with an embellished bodice featuring chain straps and ankle-grazing midi hem, paired with matching brown pumps and headband? Much to think about…
As her image architect and stylist Law Roach wrote, Zendaya really is “the prettiest girl in the world.” 🥺😳
“She literally is and always has been,” echoed RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5 winner Shea Couleé
“Beautiful,” commented fashion legend Naomi Campbell. “[I] remember this dress and collection well.”
Here at Syrup, we are big advocates of vintage, second-hand fashion—personally, half of what I own is either at least ten years old or recycled from previously existing pieces. It’s no secret that fast fashion has a detrimental impact on our environment, so preserving and wearing clothes that have already been made (and, y’know, impacted the environment when they were first made) not only is a fashion statement but also helps make fashion generally more eco-friendly and sustainable.

Zendaya’s Visionary Award comes after the Gen Z visionary inspired us all during her acceptance speech at the Emmy’s, after becoming the youngest person to ever be awarded the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama for her work on HBO’s Euphoria. You can check out her speech below while we wait at least a full year till Euphoria’s second season.
